Tell UN States to Reject Report Attacking Religious Freedoms
A new UN report issued by the UN Special Rapporteur on religious freedom or belief calls upon governments to legalize abortion, eliminate conscience clauses for medical professionals, mandate controversial comprehensive sexuality education beginning at age 10, and legalize controversial LGBT rights, ironically, all under the banner of promoting religious freedom. Help stop this report which is slated to be presented to the UN General Assembly in the fall of 2020.

PROTECT RELIGIOUS FREEDOMS
We, as concerned citizens, religious and civic leaders, officers of government, grandparents, parents and youth throughout the world, are deeply concerned by the report of the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Ahmed Shaheed, titled “Promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development.”
The report is fraught with false claims and recommendations that far exceed his mandate and constitutes an assault on the national sovereignty of all UN Member States and the religious and cultural values of the world’s people. His controversial recommendations on issues for which there is no international consensus would require governments to:
- Legalize abortion, homosexual behavior, same-sex marriage, adultery, transgender rights including “gender reassignment surgery”
- Mandate comprehensive sexuality education beginning at age 10, which often encourages high-risk sexual behavior and includes sexually graphic teaching materials
- Ban voluntary “change therapy,” for LGBT individuals
- Eliminate conscience clauses for medical professionals with regard to abortion
- Redefine the term “sex” to encompass sexual orientation and gender identities
- Withdraw Member States’ reservations to core human rights treaties if they are based on “religious considerations”

In light of this gross abuse of the Special Rapporteur’s mandate, we call upon all Member States to reject the report of the Special Rapporteur.
We further request that this report, which is an egregious assault on people of faith, the major religions of the world, and the sovereignty of nations, be struck from the OHCHR website and removed from consideration by the UNGA. This report undermines religious freedom provisions in multiple binding treaties and major UN consensus agreements, which form the basis of international human rights law.
